No Rain

We’re in for a very dry week in Charlottesville.  Low- to mid-90s every day and only 10-20% chance of rain until next Tuesday.
This presents an inconvenience for us, since we currently have an empty rain barrel and no system of catching rain, if there was any to fall.  The other problem is that, during my [...]

An update + a plethora of photos for your eyes!

Kurt always complains that we don’t take enough pictures of the garden.  So, here is a whole truckload of them for you to enjoy. As you can see, things are getting HUGE – plus, we were able to pick a zucchini that was nearly a foot long, and our first little jalapeno!  Things [...]

Wow, stuff is still growing…

So, I’ve been out of sorts for a bit.  Had a business trip to go on and therefore was out for a week.  Then I got back and thought I’d actually get some things done with the garden – WRONG!  Caught the worst head cold imaginable instead.  Damn you, airports.  And your friggin’ germs.
I recovered [...]

Catching Up

Wow, it’s been a crazy week full of extracurriculars, cleaning up the house, and a visit from the parents.  Thus my reason for not writing so much.
But, I’m here now, and I have some catching up to do as far as writing and as far as working.  Here’s a summary:

Not a lot of actual work [...]

Progress After Week-Long Hiatus

Hello everyone!
Just got back from San Diego this weekend after a long business trip out there.  Was beautiful for sure, but was getting home sick after awhile.  It’s good to be back in this wonderful city of Charlottesville!
So I do have some progress to report.  Plants inside are shooting up and getting taller!  I have [...]

The Most Poorly-Rigged Rain Catcher Ever.

There it is.
In case you’re sitting there saying to yourself, “WTF is that supposed to be,” that is my collapsible rain barrel sitting underneath a tarp held up by wiring to two tree branches I found in the woods.  Ingenious.  We’ll see what happens next time it rains.
I do have some water sitting in there…probably [...]

SEEDS!

This morning marked the first Charlottesville City Market of the year, and so I went looking around with Kurt.  This was Kurt’s first farmer’s market and I’m proud of him for getting out of bed before 7 am to go! Not sure if he’ll do it again, but that’s okay – getting up [...]

An Update: Seedlings and Rain-Catching

So I’ve been out of town for most of the week, so things have been a little slow with the gardening.  However, there is one thing I can finally brag about – my little seedlings!  I can’t believe these guys shot up less than a week after I planted them.  Two broccoli, two lettuce, and [...]

Did Some Hoeing Last Night and Planted Some Seed (ha!)

Did the title of the post grab your attention?    Good.
I headed to the garden yesterday evening to see how dry it was going to be.  I had guessed that at least the back row (the least muddy part) could be dried out by now, and I was right.  The soil was still just [...]
